As we get closer to the end of the year ask yourself … are you the kind of person who is already making New year’s resolutions right now?
If so, ask yourself how many New Year’s resolutions have you been able to stick to (and be very honest with yourself here)?
Many of us think that making healthy New Year resolutions is good for you but actually they are not good for your mental wellbeing at all and there is two main reasons for this:
Firstly, most resolutions focus on what you want to ‘give up’ or ‘lose’. Within our mind ‘loss’ can be a very scary word which our mind dislikes and will then work to avoid at all costs!
Secondly, they often focus on limiting or restricting you, often being very rigid too, which results in your brain looking for ways in which to escape from them!
So, if like so many people, you say to yourself that you want to for example “lose weight” your brain works against you. But by reframing the way that you think about resolutions you avoid this inner conflict. To do this is actually very simple – just add “I am/love” to each resolution and trust that your mind will then work to make your words a reality.
For example instead of “I am going to lose weight” or “I am not eating biscuits and chocolate” replace it with suggestions such as:-
The great thing about “I am” or “I love” statements is that you cannot break the resolutions.
