Teeth grinding and jaw clenching (also called bruxism) is often related to stress and anxiety. It can lead to:-
Most people who grind their teeth are unaware that they are doing it as it happens during the sleep state, whilst concentrating or at very stressful times. Consequently it is often loved ones that tell the person that they are grinding their teeth.
The facial pain and headaches often disappear as soon as you stop grinding your teeth. However, any damage to the teeth will need to be repaired by a dentist.
Dentists often provide either a mouth guard or mouth splint to be worn during sleep to prevent further damage. However, this only prevents further damage and is not addressing the underlying problems.
Hypnotherapy is used to help people by reducing the level of anxiety and stress which is causing the teeth grinding, dealing with any unresolved emotional issues or unexpressed anger and developing healthier coping strategies. In addition to hypnotherapy other therapeutic approaches which may also be used includes cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, thought field therapy (tapping) and spiritual healing.
The number of sessions required varies from four to six (weekly).
