We all know what it’s like to feel anxious from time to time perhaps when dealing with a difficult situation especially if it has a big impact upon your life (e.g. starting a new job, sitting exams, getting married/divorced, moving home or being diagnosed with an illness). Most of us can cope with some anxiety and still lead perfectly healthy lives.
Since evolution humans have developed ways to keep ourselves safe from dangerous situations. When we feel under threat in any situation our bodies respond with what is often referred to as ‘Fight or Flight’. When you feel under threat your body responds by releasing hormones (Adrenalin and Cortisol) which help you to either fight the danger or run away from it. As this happens the hormones can make you feel more alert so that you can respond quickly and your heart will beat faster to pump blood around your body where it is needed most. When the anticipated danger has then passed your body releases other hormones to help your muscles relax which may result in you shaking.
Physical sensations may include: feeling sick or light headed, tense muscles, headaches, perspiring, hot flushes, raised blood pressure, difficulty sleeping, panic attacks, breathing faster, needing the toilet more often, churning in your stomach.
Psychological sensations may include: feeling tense/nervous, having a sense of dread, having a very busy mind, feeling restless, unable to concentrate, dwelling on negative experiences and thinking of situations repeatedly (this is called rumination).
If you are experiencing anxiety regularly and it is negatively impacting upon your life then you need to seek help.
The most common types of anxiety includes:
If you go to your Doctor with anxiety they may be able to refer you for a talking therapy or they may offer you medication or a combination of both.
In my experience most people seeking help with hypnotherapy have decided that they would prefer not to go down the medication route and the talking therapy has either not been available to them timely or it has not helped them.
Hypnotherapy is very effective helping you to overcome anxiety because it deals with any underlying issues and helps you to focus on the present and moving forward to the future more confidently.
The number of sessions required varies as every client is unique but most anxiety clients note rapid improvements and only need up to six sessions (usually weekly).
