Empowering you to become healthier and happier
Empowering you to become healthier and happier

How was your “blue Monday” following Christmas? So many people feel low at this time of year but it doesn’t have to be that way.
For many people, it can feel especially difficult right now to be optimistic but I would like to remind you that your mind holds great power when it comes to getting through challenging times.
The last few years have indeed been challenging and the recent decline in festive spirit, continuation of colder weather coupled with the pressure of new year’s resolutions, stretched finances, lack of job satisfaction or progression and maybe strained relationships too can result in feelings such as being overwhelmed.
To get through it is important to not focus on all the external factors that you have no control over, but instead to focus on what you can control. Keeping a to do list is a great way of showing your brain that you are in control!
Your mind has an amazing ability to influence your daily reality. You don’t have to be optimistic, but you can believe that things won’t always stay the same as they are right now, as it will soon pass by.
Keeping your mind in the present moment by focussing on doing simple everyday things (such as taking time to breathe slowly, doing your everyday tasks – eating, drinking, cooking, walking, talking etc.) helps to keep you grounded and prevents your mind jumping into the future (where anxiety resides) or in the past (where depression lays).
When noticing that you are experiencing difficult emotions, like so many people are right now, firstly notice the feelings, then secondly accept the feelings (e.g. saying “thanks brain I’m noticing a feeling that x) which satisfies your brain that you have paid attention to the message it has send to you to protect you, then distract yourself momentarily (e.g. noticing the colour in a picture, or a shape of a vase/mug, taste your drink etc.) and then refocus on what you should be doing or something else more positive or helpful.
Take a moment to think of everything that you are grateful for in your life and accept that life is a journey where we learn lessons along the way.
Be kind to yourself as well as those around you and do things that you enjoy. Perhaps listening to relaxing music, become immersed in a good book, go for a refreshing walk, watch an uplifting movie, plan a cuppa and chat with family or friends, indulge in a hobby that you enjoy or maybe try to learn something new.
